Program description

Learn the core elements of digital manufacturing from 3D printing to mechatronics.

Overview

In this programme, you will learn the fundamentals of different additive manufacturing processes, computer-aided design and its implementation through computer graphics, computer-aided manufacturing and its implementation through open-source software, predictive maintenance and mechatronic systems and associated tools.

As you advance through the programme, you’ll learn to:

  • Design for additive manufacturing.
  • Use CAD and CAM software efficiently.
  • Work with microcontrollers and learn the basics of PLC programming and programmable motion control.
  • Use predictive maintenance to save simulation and experimentation costs and time, and minimise maintenance downtime.

Design engineers, production engineers, machine tool builders, product engineers, application engineers, maintenance engineers, will find this programme useful.

Required background

A bachelor's degree in any technology or engineering field with basic knowledge of programming is required to successfully enrol in and complete this programme.

Essentials of Additive Manufacturing

Overview

Additive Manufacturing, popularly known as 3D Printing, is one of the digital manufacturing processes and a key enabler of Industry 4.0. This course will introduce you to the fundamental concepts of different additive manufacturing processes. It involves a detailed discussion on the working principles, classifications, process parameters, system architecture, etc.

Computer-Aided Design

Overview

In this course, you will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of computer-aided design and its implementation through computer graphics. The course involves topics related to the CAD foundation, 3D Graphics pipeline and its stages, OpenGL programming to implement the stages, and hands-on experience with the SolidWorks CAD tool.

Computer-Aided Manufacturing

Overview

In this course, you will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of computer-aided manufacturing and its implementation through open-source software. The course involves topics related to the Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP), Essentials of CNC machines and Robotic Arms, NC programming, and Toolpath generation through open-source software and CAD/CAM tool PowerShape and PowerMill.

Digital Twin and Predictive Maintenance

Overview

In this course, you will be introduced to industrial revolutions, digital twins, rules of modeling, new technologies for digital twins, data-driven smart manufacturing and data-driven predictive maintenance.

Applications/case studies will also be discussed to give a holistic view of the digital twin, smart manufacturing and predictive maintenance.

Mechatronics

Overview

This course is designed to introduce you to working with mechatronic systems and their associated tools. The course provides information on various types of sensors and actuators and how to work with microcontrollers. Furthermore, PLC programming and programmable motion control are introduced.
