Program description

Build out the data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning capabilities your organization needs by leveraging the theories and strategies of platform design management and strategy.

Overview

The January 2024 cohort was the last time the certificate program will be offered in this format.

In this program, you will gain the knowledge and experience necessary to facilitate strategic and impactful change at your organization. You will learn how to identify challenges associated with building data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning capabilities, and examine ways to develop digital transformation strategies to solve these challenges.

You’ll build foundational knowledge about forces of technological and economic change and the journey of digital transformation through real-world examples drawn from industries such as financial services, manufacturing, and healthcare.

Through hands-on projects and applications, you will develop the skills and tools needed to successfully manage digital transformation journeys, and you’ll benefit from access to easy-to-use-simulation and optimization tools that leverage cloud technology. You’ll explore digital product design and development and examine its relationship to agile project management, and learn to craft the metrics that are a critical part of any organization’s transformation efforts.

This certificate draws from the expertise of the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program at Dartmouth. 4 courses in this 6 month program

Course 1 of 4

Digital Transformation and Platforms

Overview

In this course, you’ll get an introduction to the idea of digital transformation and the challenges that organizations face when implementing major transformation projects. You’ll learn how major technology initiatives can be broken down into more manageable chunks in a way that mirrors agile product development processes. You’ll examine the challenges of implementing business-to-consumer (B2C) tools and ideas in a business-to-business (B2B) setting and explore frameworks and approaches for how to overcome these challenges. Finally, you’ll discuss staffing gaps that emerge when organizations implement digital transformation initiatives and what new capabilities can be created. Throughout the course, principles will be brought to life through accessible examples and case studies.

Course 2 of 4

A Managerial View of Data Analytics for Digital Transformation

Overview

In this course, you’ll learn concepts for measuring critical aspects of digital transformation throughout the lifecycle of projects. Different metrics will be discussed by project stage, and non-financial metrics will be introduced to help you build a full suite of tools to understand the status of your projects. You’ll engage in discussion around the language of things, the language of money, and the connections between the two, as you explore key differences between a discounted cash flow (DCF) view versus a real options view. You’ll then examine the crucial role of experimentation in providing rapid feedback to inform innovation initiatives. The special case of platforms, user bases, network effects, and virality will be covered. Finally, you’ll conclude with a discussion of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and their ties to digital transformation and innovation initiatives.

Course 3 of 4

Digital Analytics and Tools for Managerial Decision-Making

Overview

In this course, you’ll use predictive analytics tools and leverage historical data to identify the likelihood of future outcomes and evaluate what-if scenarios under various strategic and operational settings. You’ll also cover the use of prescriptive analytics and experience the power of optimization tools to streamline process design, planning, and operations. Upon completion of this course, you’ll be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of easy-to-use cloud-based analytics tools.

Course 4 of 4

Digital Age Product Design and Development

Overview

In this course, you'll get an introduction to the principles, processes, and methods of designing and developing successful digital products. You will define the key terminology, tools, and phases of the product design and development process, including how to adapt a generic process based on the type of product and a firm’s context. You'll build the skills needed to develop advanced problem-solving and creativity skills, gain proficiency in rapidly translating ideas into low-fidelity prototypes, and employ user experience design and human-centered techniques. You will also demonstrate the fundamentals of project management, including agile practices, to coordinate project resources, team members, and stakeholders.
