1. What Is LED Display Module?

An LED display module is a circuit that integrates LED lamp beads and other electronics necessary for the LED lamp beads to show images and videos. 

It has various sizes, which can be used to construct LED display cabinets with different sizes and parameters. 

1.1 Common Sizes of LED Screen Module

The sizes of LED screen modules are various, here we list some common sizes: 320*160mm, 250*250mm, 192*192mm, 320*320mm, and so on.

Customers can choose different sizes to construct LED screens with different ratios. 

1.2 Pixel Pitch of Indoor&Outdoor LED Display Module

What is pixel pitch? It refers to the distance between the core of two LED display lamps that are neighboring and is measured in millimeters.

It describes the density of the pixels (LED clusters) on an LED display and correlates with resolution. And there is a negative relationship between resolution and pixel pitch.

The lower the pixel pitch, the more tightly packed together the pixels are (the higher the pixel density), also meaning higher resolution of the module. 

For indoor LED display module, as it usually requires comparative closer viewing distance than outdoor ones, the pixel pitch may be smaller. For example, P1.25, P1.86, P2.5, P2.604, P3.91 are common parameterss.

And for outdoor LED display module, P3.91, P4, P5, P4.81, P6.67 and P10 are usual.

1.3 Structure of LED Screen Module

(1). PCB board

PCB board refers to a printed circuit board where IC driver and lamp beads and other electronics will be equipped on it. And copper conductor tracks on it interconnect its components.

On the front, LEDs are inserted and, on the back, the ICs (chips or integrated circuits) are assembled to manage color, brightness, reproduction of images, etc.

(2). LED lamp bead

The most important part of modules, and also take the role of reproducing images. Each square meter of LED display module can lay down thousands to tens of thousands of LED lamp bead, and the number of them decides the definition and pixel pitch.

In a word, LED lamp beads have vital impact on the screen from many aspects: viewing angle, brightness level, faliure rate, lifespan, consistency, etc.

The common brands include NationStar, Kinglight and HongSun. Here are some usual models of SMD LED lamp beads: SMD1010, SMD2020, SMD2525, SMD2727, and SMD3535 (the name of the model decided by size of the lamp bead). Usually, there is a positive relationship between the size and brightness level.

(3). IC driver

IC driver distributes electricity and signals for LED lamp beads and also decides the scanning modes based on how many lamp beads are controlled by one pin.

One of the most necessary functions of IC chips designed for LED display screens is providing constant flow source to enable stable visual performance of LED screen such as avoid flicker. For example, a high-quality IC driver supports high refresh rate.

There are some international-famous IC driver producers such as Chipone, Macroblock and SUNMOON. And the regular IC driver models includes MBI5124, MBI5153, ICN2037 ,ICN2038S ,ICN2153, FM6124, FM2153, ect.  The MY9868 is usually used for transparent LED displays and grille LED screen.

(4). Sheer

Protect the printed circuit, and fix the chassis of the cabinet.

Rainproof modules usually incorporate rubber gaskets to prevent water or moisture from entering the modules to reduce risks of failures of electronic components.

(5). Cables: flat cable and power line

The cables transmit signals and electricity between modules and also connect them.

(6). Rubber ring

For outdoor LED display, the rubber ring can improve waterproof ability by avoiding water-entering.

(7). Mask

The black plastic front piece has many holes that match the position of LEDs.

For outdoor screen, the visor-type ledge on each LED can improve its visibility with direct sunlight.

2. How to Install and Connect LED Screen Module?

2.1 Connection of LED Display Modules

We use two types of cables to connect LED modules. The first one is a power line, which transmits electricity. 

And the other one we often call it flat cable, it will send data from the controller card or receiving card.

2.2 How to Install LED Display Panel Module?

Here are two main installation methods – fixation with screws and magnetic fixation.

(1) Fixation with screws:

The modules are fixed to the cabinet structure with screws. 

(2) Magnetic fixation

Magnetic fixation supports quick maintenance in a few seconds, so the screws are replaced by magnets. 

Typically we can equip 6 magnets for one module to balance the stability and convenience. And if there are too many magnets, the modules will be difficult to be moved.

We all know LED module technology is widely used in many scenarios such as shopping malls, classrooms, hospitals, conference rooms, exhibitions, and so on.

It is no doubt that it is a breakthrough at that time, but also a matured application nowadays.

4. 5 Types of LED Display Module

Generally, there are DIP LED module, SMD LED module, COB LED module, Mini LED module, OLED LED, and different LED display technologies decide they have different properties.

4.1 SMD LED Module

SMD is the abbreviation of Surface Mounted Devices. 

An SMD LED Module (surface-mount device light-emitting diode module) is a type of LED module that uses surface-mount technology (SMT) to mount SMD LEDs on printed circuit boards (PCB).

The production process includes that a high-speed placement machine to solder the LED lamp beads on the circuit board to make LED display modules with different pixel pitches.

SMD LED display module now is the predominant LED display module industry, accounting for market share of more than 70%. 

The main models include SMD1010, SMD2020, SMD2525, SMD2727 and SMD3535 (the name of model decided by size of lamp bead). The larger the size of it, the higher the brightness level of it.

(1) High color uniformity

The high color uniformity and color fidelity decide its excellent visual performance.

(2) Solid structure

The inside components of LED lamp bead are potted with epoxy resin, protecting them from outside damage.

Moreover, the soldering process is accurate, so lamp beads is not easy to apart from the board.

(3) Long working life

The common service life of SMD LED display is 50,000 to 100,000 hours. Even you put it under running for 24 hours, the working life can be up to 10 years.

(4) Energy-saving feature

The power consumption of single LED lamp bead is about 0.04 to 0.085w. However, it still can support high brightness level.

(5) Comparative lower production cost

As this technology has been developed for many years and has been rolled out in the whole industry so the production cost is relatively low.

The protection ability can be improved further as deadlights and broken light beads are a common failure for SMD LED screen.

4.2 DIP LED Module

DIP refers to Dual In-Line Package, a kind of LED packaging technology that is common on the LED display market. 

DIP LED module means there are many DIP LEDs integrated on the module surface. Not like SMD LEDs, in a DIP display, the red LED, green LED and blue LED is visible from every angle of the screen.

DIP LED display modules have different types: one color, dual color and RGB.   

DIP LED display modules have high brightness level and high protection ability, thus can resist outdoor environment, and can meet the requirements of environmental light.

It is usually used for high pixel pitch outdoor LED display as the longer viewing distance.

Limited to the size of single LED lamp bead, Dip LED module can not have small pixel pitch so that is not suitable for indoor applications.

The production process is complicated, and efficiency is comparatively low. Moreover, many manufacturers use inferior raw materials and PCB boards, which leads to low-quality products.

Also, the viewing angle is narrow, only 100 to 110 degree.

4.3 COB LED Module

COB means chip on board, it integrates the chip directly to the PCB board, which can improve the efficiency of packaging and narrowing the distance between different lamp lights. 

To avoid pollution and damages to the chips, the producer will package the chips and bonding wires with glue.

(1) Tackling the pain point of heat dissipation

One of the aims of COB technology is to deal with heat dissipation. The simple structure makes COB LED performances better in this aspect.

(2) Simpler packaging process

The simpler structure makes the packaging process simpler, which is needless to say.

(3) Small pixel pitch available

As the chips are directly connected to the PCB board, the distances between each unit are narrow so as to decrease the pixel pitch to provide customers with clearer images.

The distance between two LED lamp beads is narrow as the chips can be directly connected to the PCB board. Therefore, it is inherently suitable for small pixel LED display.

(4) Higher protection ability

As luminescent devices are completely enclosed in the PCB board, there is much less risks of LED lamp beads dropping out.

(1) Possible inconsistent color

There may be problems caused by modularization as high modularization can result in inconsistency in color.

The highly modularization may cause inconsistency in color, thus affecting the whole visual performance.

(2) Possible lack of surface evenness

Sometimes the surface may lack evenness due to the gluing process – each LED lamp bead will be glued separately.

(3) More difficult maintenance

Because the maintenance needs special tools, and usually need to be operated by professional staff.

Now here are two main maintenance ways, one is returning the faulty products, the other one is dispatching maintenance personnel. Both of them all can be more time-consuming and more complex.

4.4 GOB LED Module

GOB refers to glue on board, which uses a transparent materials to package PCB surface and packaging units of the module to improve UV-resistant, waterproof and dustproof ability. GOB LED module also can avoid potential crash that happen frequently during transportation and installation.  

(1) Higher protection ability

The main aim of GOB LED is to reduce risks caused by water, humidity, collision, etc. And the glue on the board improve the corresponding ability largely.

Moreover, GOB LED modules can avoid large-scale dead pixels and broken pixels.

(2) Same excellent visual performance as SMD LED module with high contrast ratio, wide grayscale and fine pixel pitch. 

It applies stents packaging technology just like SMD LED displays, thus has the same technical problems of SMD LEDs such as heat dissipation.

4.5 Mini LED Module

Mini LED is a type of LED technology with LED chip size between 50 and 200 microns, which is an improved product based on small pixel LEDs. Generally, it refers to LED display screen with pixel pitch from 0.3mm to 1.5mm.

It combines existing LCD technology (including local dimming design, thousands and thousands of straight down backlight,s and more fine HDR partitioning) with the matured RGB LED technology.

According to reports, the main applications of Mini LEDs in the future will cover TVs, cell phones, automotive panels, high-definition monitors, gaming laptops, and so on.

The market volume may reach one billion dollars in 2023, and LED monitors and large-sizes TVs will be the mainstream of Mini LED market.

(1). Compared to traditional LEDs, Mini LEDs has features of high resolution, high contrast and wide colour gamut. However, the size is thinner, and the weight is lighter.

(2). It solves the easy damage of ultra-small pitch LED display and makes up for the shortage of small pitch LED.

(3). Compared with LCD display, it has higher brightness level and contrast ratio.

(1). Problems of heat dissipation. Because needed LED lamp beads are much large in number, heat-dissipation becomes a technical problem to be solved.

(2). High cost. As mini LEDs technology is still not applied widely, the production cost is obviously higher than most kinds of other LED technologies.
